Shannon Health System to Expand West Texas Presence with Scenic Mountain Medical Center Acquisition
Shannon Health System has reached an agreement to acquire Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Big Spring, Texas, bolstering access to healthcare services across the West Texas region. The move signifies a strategic expansion for Shannon, aiming to integrate Scenic Mountain into its existing network and enhance patient care offerings.
The acquisition, pending regulatory approvals, will bring Scenic Mountain Medical Center under the umbrella of Shannon, which currently operates three hospitals, 25 clinics, and employs over 400 healthcare providers throughout West Texas. This follows Shannon’s earlier investment in 2024 with the purchase of West Texas Medical Plaza, the location of Scenic Mountain Medical Group, demonstrating a clear commitment to the Big Spring community.
Strengthening Regional Healthcare Infrastructure
The integration of Scenic Mountain Medical Center is designed to preserve and expand vital healthcare access for residents of Big Spring and surrounding areas. According to a company release, Shannon plans a significant investment in both primary and specialty care services. These expansions will include new departments focused on cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, orthopedics, general surgery, neurosurgery, nephrology, allergology, and oncology.
“It is an honor to take this step with the Big Spring community,” stated the president and CEO of Shannon. “This agreement allows us to bring more care and resources to our patients.”
Facility Upgrades and New Services
Beyond expanding medical specialties, Shannon intends to modernize facilities at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Planned renovations will focus on the urology department and other key areas. A new urgent care walk-in clinic will be established to provide immediate care for non-life-threatening conditions. Furthermore, the hospital will receive updated imaging and mammography equipment, funded by a generous contribution from the GC Broughton Jr. Foundation.

The CEO of Scenic Mountain Medical Center echoed the positive sentiment surrounding the acquisition. “Joining Shannon is a natural fit. Their regional presence and commitment to advanced care strengthens our ability to serve Big Spring,” he stated. This collaboration is expected to leverage the strengths of both organizations, creating a more robust and comprehensive healthcare system for the region.
The transaction is anticipated to finalize in the coming months, subject to the completion of all required regulatory reviews. Until then, both Shannon Health System and Scenic Mountain Medical Center will continue to operate independently, ensuring uninterrupted care for their patients and maintaining stability for their employees.
