Before becoming a TV series, “Shantaram” was a hugely popular novel written by Gregory David Roberts. Partially inspired by the personal stories of the author, the book was a huge success, so much so that Johnny Depp was persuaded to buy the rights for the film adaptation in 2008. The over a thousand pages of Roberts’ work failed to become a film, but they will finally come to life on the small screen on October 14 with the show co-created by Eric Warren Singer and Steve Lightfoot for Apple +. One of the most fascinating characters of the Karla series, played by Antonia Desplat, who thus anticipates her role in “Shantaram”: “Karla is an enigma, indefinable and with a thousand faces depending on the people she meets. She can be manipulative, frightening, a bond girl but also vulnerable, in a way that leads viewers to be her allies. I tried to restore this transformation, also using costumes a lot, as was already the case in the novel. “
