Mayor Choi Won-cheol of Gongju, South Chungcheong Province (pictured), said in an interview with the Dong-A Ilbo on the 19th, “I am delighted that the ‘2024 Gongju Baekje Marathon’ will be held in Gongju, the capital of Baekje and a world heritage city, this year as well.” Mayor Choi said of the marathon, “It is the event in which one must travel the longest distance alone among the Olympic track and field events,” and “In the marathon, the pain, the joy, and the sense of accomplishment are all yours alone.” He said, “I believe that this competition will become a new source of vitality in my life and an opportunity to grow to the next level,” and “I applaud the efforts and passion that the participants have put into this competition, and I hope that they will safely complete the race while sharing in Gongju’s historical spirit and beautiful scenery.”
Following the Gongju Baekje Marathon on the 22nd, the Baekje Cultural Festival will open on the 28th. Mayor Choi said, “Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do, is a historical and cultural city that preserves the breath of Baekje, which was brilliant 1,500 years ago.” He added, “The Baekje Cultural Festival, Gongju’s representative festival, will be held under the theme of ‘Baekje’s Culture, 70th Great Step,’ so I hope you visit Gongju with your family and friends after the marathon and make great memories.”
