The Supreme Court left unchanged the sentence against journalist Merkis

Judge of the Supreme Court Vladimir Charavach left the appeal of the political prisoner Eugene Merkis without satisfaction, write human rights defenders.

On May 30, the Gomel Regional Court sentenced Yevgeny to 4 years of imprisonment under the enhanced regime according to part 1 and 2 of Art. 361-4 of the Criminal Code (“facilitating extremist activities”) and Part 3 of Art. 361-1 of the Criminal Code (“creating an extremist formation or participating in it”).

According to the court’s verdict, Yevhen allegedly sent information about the movement of military equipment via telegram channels. They also report that Merkis worked for the Belsat television channel, which the authorities recognized as extremist.

Rubts was again placed in SHIZA

In June 2022, according to the decision of the Navapolat judge Olga Balika police prisoner Pinchuk Oleg Rubts was transferred for 3 years from the colony to Zhodzina prison No. 8. He was kept in the penitentiary for almost 200 days over the last year.

Now the relatives of the political prisoner wrote on social networks that Oleg was again placed in SHIZA:

“Two months!.. 60 days… 1440 hours… Alone, in a “stone bag”!

Oleg is back at SHIZA. No correspondence, calls, books. 24/7 alone with my thoughts, dreams, hopes, disappointments, but not broken in spirit!!!”

Rubts was detained on August 10, 2020 for participating in protests in Pinsk (Part 2, Article 293 of the Criminal Code). During the detention, they were severely beaten. On April 30, Oleg was sentenced to 5.5 years in the colony.
