A large-scale search and rescue operation is currently underway off the coast of pacific Grove, California, after a 55-year-old woman disappeared during a routine open-water swim on Sunday, December 21, 2025. Woman Missing After Reported “Large Splash”
The incident occurred near Lovers Point during a weekly swim with a regular group.According to investigators,the group entered the water as usual around noon when a witness on the shoreline reported observing a “large splash.” This prompted the remaining swimmers to return to shore, fearing a potential encounter with a shark.
“She’s a 55-year-old, blonde, blue eyes woman that is currently missing and that we’re searching,” stated Commander Brian Anderson with the Pacific grove Police Department. All other members of the swimming group returned to shore safely.
While shark sightings are considered rare along the Central Coast, law enforcement officials acknowledge they do occur. Based on the witness account, authorities believe the incident is consistent with a possible shark attack.The possibility,though,remains unconfirmed.
Multiple agencies are collaborating in the search, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Monterey Fire Department, Seaside Fire, and CAL FIRE. Search teams are utilizing rescue boats, drones, and helicopters to scan the water and surrounding areas.
Beach Closures Extended as Search Continues
As a precautionary measure, Lovers Point Beach and all beaches within one mile have been closed to the public as of sunday afternoon.The city of Pacific Grove issued a statement thanking the community for their cooperation with the closure.
Additionally,McAbee Beach and San carlos Beach in Monterey were closed on Sunday at approximately 1:30 p.m. due to safety concerns related to the unconfirmed shark incident. The City of Monterey has urged the public to respect the closures and avoid the affected areas until further notice.
Authorities have indicated that if the swimmer is not located before nightfall, search efforts will resume first thing Monday morning.Beaches in the area are expected to remain closed on monday if the search continues.
