A Russian was attacked and killed on Thursday by a shark in the Red Sea, off the city of Hurghada (Egypt). The Egyptian Ministry of the Environment confirmed the information on Facebook without giving further details.

In a video shared on social media and presented as showing the attack, a person appears to be struggling to escape a shark. According to the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment, the shark was captured and its examination revealed “abnormal behavior […] who caused the incident.

Swimming and water games are suspended for two days from this Friday in the area. The Red Sea is an important tourist destination in Egypt. Sharks are not rare there but very rarely attack swimmers. In July 2022, two tourists had been killed by a shark near Hurghada. In 2018, a Czech tourist was killed by a shark off an Egyptian beach in the Red Sea, as well as another in 2015 and another in 2010.
