Shark Sighting in Glyfada: Are We Safe from Toxic Lionfish?

by time news

Here a shark appeared in Glyfada, wouldn’t we see a toxic fish?

They say that this specific fish has been in Greek waters since 2005, when it migrated from the Suez Canal, and this year it has become quite problematic. But tell us, here a shark showed up in Glyfada, would we be able to escape from the rabbitfish? The only difference, of course, is that a shark will bite you, while the rabbitfish is toxic and indeed particularly aggressive.

What is the rabbitfish?

As Mr. Gerasimos Koundilatos, ichthyologist at the Rhodes Hydrobiological Station of ELKEHET, recently stated, “a bite from a rabbitfish can potentially cause some amputation or an injury,” while many bathers in the country have spotted this specific fish, with some Cretans even fishing for giant rabbitfish:

It has been in our areas since 2005, and at this moment it has developed large populations. Perhaps some areas have a somewhat more pronounced presence, but they are everywhere. We find them in Crete and the rest of the Dodecanese, in the Cyclades and in the Peloponnese. Right now, they have reached up to Lefkada.”

In short, if you see such a fish, just get out of the sea. Don’t stay to pet it.
