She, daughter of one of the last prompters, was predestined for prominence; he didn’t, he simply wanted to be a religion teacher. They met at the theatre, fell in love at the cinema, got married after four years and are now one of the most interesting couples on the noble Neapolitan scene that is projected into the world. They are Susy Del Giudice and Giovanni Esposito. Following their answers is a gymkhana of fun: she hands him the memories, he the withering joke.
Let’s start at the beginning. First meeting, two versions.
Of the Judge: We met thanks to Mario Scarpetta. I was acting in In Santarella; he was in the audience because some of his friends were in his company. After the show he approaches me in the foyer, he showers me with compliments that I don’t receive: I was coming out of a bad story and I didn’t want any more disappointments. In the ritual dinner, after the show at the Tot theater, I find him in front of me; the following evening at the theater and so on. By frequenting him I discover a person of great quality that I start to like. Had it been for him, however, we’d still be getting to know each other. I was the one to turn it around with an invitation to the cinema to see Titanic.
Esposito: I confirm everything: it was 1998, I went to the theater for Mario Scarpetta and Veronica Mazza, but I make a clarification: at the first meeting he ignored me and continued to do so. When it was decided to invite me to the cinema, my thought was only one: but when does DiCaprio die? The film seemed eternal to me, I just wanted to get out of being with her.
Of the Judge: My father was a prompter or rather a ‘joke reminder’. He has spent his life in the hole of the Neapolitan and Italian theaters, working for Mario Scaccia, the Giuffr, Mario Merola, Nino D’Angelo, Massimo Ranieri and other. Her dream was that I could be on the other side. So when a little girl was needed for a drama by Beniamino Maggio at the Teatro Duemila in Naples: here she is, she said, pointing at me. I was seven years old. Three performances a day were performed with the skit, from 12 to 1 in the morning, and the prompter’s role was strategic: often, when we were late, he assumed the responsibility of making cuts to the text, he also suggested exits and come in, he was kind of an assistant director. Also in the cinema: work with Lina Wertmller in Pasqualino Seven Beauties. A little girl was needed there too: the film marked my debut on the big screen.
Esposito: As a boy I attended the parish of Santa Maria dell’Arco, in Miano. We did many activities. I liked studying, I wanted to become a professor, but I didn’t have foundations so I opted for a degree in Science of Religions. My father didn’t want to. That’s right, he had it in his head that I should be an actor. Usually the opposite, I know. In my case, however, he was the one who stubbornly stuck: he had seen me in parish plays and according to him I was good. He convinced me out of exhaustion. Invested two hundred thousand lire for the audition at the Bellini Academy. I accepted but on one condition. I told him: if they catch me I’ll continue, if they exclude me, you’ll put your soul at peace. They took me and already the following year I made my debut in Much ado about nothing with the Parma Building.
Of the Judge: S, directed by Armando Pugliese at the theater and produced by Melina Balsamo, at the cinema in A small southern business by Rocco Papaleo and in the Rai Fiction film As different as two drops of water by Luca Lucini.
Esposito: I even direct her at the theatre The hand kisser by Manlio Santanelli and I share the stage with her in Exit by Antonio Marfella. In reality, an actress failed at the last moment, the pice risked skipping and to avoid her displeasure I slipped on a wig and became the actress who was missing. I didn’t know a joke, I placed an earpiece in my ear from which our daughter, script in her hand, prompted me.
Like grandpa did. It all comes back. How does this 2023 start?
Of the Judge: Good! In the fiction based on the novel by Elena Ferrante and directed by Edoardo De Angelis, I am Margherita, a friend of Giovanna, played by the very generous Valeria Golino. Mother of four, before becoming a widow, she discovered my husband’s infidelity with a woman I know well. When he dies, an extended family relationship is established between us. In Mina September I am the caregiver Sonia while also in the second season of Commissioner Ricciardi — we just finished shooting — I’m Maria Colombo, Enrica’s mother (Maria Vera Ratti ndr), secret love and neighbor of the protagonist.
Esposito: I recite in two fioutgoing lm: Shakespeare king of Naples by Ruggero Cappuccio and Bad Conscience by David Minnella. and then there Uonderbois, the Disney+ series shot in Naples with Serena Rossi: I have an interesting role, it’s a great production.
