Shebaz Sharif, leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-N, has been elected the new Prime Minister of Pakistan.

He received a majority of votes in a vote convened by the Pakistani parliament on Monday.

Mr Shebaz Sharif is the brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

In today’s vote, all members of parliament from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, which formed the previous government that lost office, decided to resign.

They also boycotted the vote for prime minister.

The coalition government led by Mr Shebaz Sharif will remain in office until the general election in August next year.
