DhakaAfter the change of power in Bangladesh, Awami League leaders are constantly being targeted by the mob. There have also been attacks on the identity associated with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh and Sheikh Hasina’s father. Mujib’s statues have been toppled by the mob at many places. Amidst all this, the Awami League is making big preparations. The Awami League is preparing to organize a program on August 15 to pay tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his 49th death anniversary. However, this is not going to be easy because Sheikh Hasina, the president of the Awami League and the country’s longest-serving Prime Minister, has left the country and most of the party leaders are currently underground.
Awami League leaders and activists are planning to step out for a program to pay tribute to Sheikh Mujibur on August 15, Dhaka Tribune reported. Awami League grassroots leaders and activists are preparing to gather at Bangabandhu Bhaban on Dhanmondi Road No. 32 on August 15. They are also planning to pay tribute at the cemetery built near the mausoleum of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Tungipara. On Sunday night, Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed Joy also urged Awami League activists to gather at Dhanmondi Road No. 32 to pay tribute to Bangabandhu on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s death anniversary. According to sources, along with the Awami League, Sechhasebok League, Jubo League, Jubo Mohila League and like-minded organizations are also planning a candle march on August 15.

Workers are not speaking due to fear of action

According to the report, people associated with the Awami League are not telling the media about this program due to fear of security and action. Most of the Awami League leaders are in hiding since August 5 and have also deleted their social media accounts. Bangladesh’s father of the nation and first president Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed along with most of his family members on August 15, 1975 by a group of Bangladesh Army officers who attacked his Dhanmondi 32 residence.

BBC Bangla claimed in a report that the Awami League has also requested security assurances from the new interim government amid the ongoing political uncertainty following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation on August 5. BBC Bangla quoted Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif as saying that a formal request for security measures has been made to the interim government.
