The proper Spanish spelling of the name of Israel’s currency is sequelbetter than shekel, shekel o shekel.

However, in the media you can find phrases such as “The Israeli currency briefly recovered from losses and is trading at 3.9 shekels per dollar”, “Currency traders have pushed the shekel to its lowest level in eight years” or “The shekel is already at its weakest level of the year.”

According to the list of monetary symbols included in the third appendix of the Spelling of the Spanish language, sequel, without ax after the that and with the digraph that, is the transcription from Hebrew to Spanish of the name of this currency. Furthermore, it is written with accent because it is a plain word ending in a consonant other than ene or esa. According to this same work, its symbol is ₪ and its triliteral code is ILS.

So, in the examples above it would have been appropriate to write “The Israeli currency briefly recovered from losses and is trading at 3.9 shekels per dollar”, “Currency traders have pushed the shekel to its lowest level in eight years” and “The shekel is already at its weakest level of the year.”

As seen in the first sentence, the plural of sequel es aftereffectssince nouns and adjectives ending in -l form the plural with -es. Therefore, it is advisable not to use other variants, such as shekels or the Hebrew plural Shekalim.
