HBO’s superhero drama Lanterns concluded its first season on October 5, 2026, with a finale revealing that Sheriff Kerry killed Hal Jordan in 2016, while John Stewart claimed the ring and forged an independent path as a Green Lantern.
The season one finale of Lanterns, titled Dirt and Stars,
brought closure to the central mystery haunting the series since its premiere. For eight weeks, viewers watched John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, investigate the death of Earth’s veteran Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler. Rather than relying on standard superhero spectacle, the episode delivered a grounded resolution that reframed the dynamics of the cosmic police force.

However, Hal’s house was firebombed, and he discovered that Kerry’s son, Noah, played by Shea Pritchard, was the secret second Manhunter who had also freed Sinestro, played by Ulrich Thomsen, from a high-security space prison and built a yellow ring using fear-inducing gas from an alien planet. When Hal tried to warn Kerry about Noah’s dangerous true nature and reasoned with her, panic took over. Fearing for her son and desperate to protect him, Kerry shot and killed Hal as he told her, Goddamnit, I love you.

John Stewart Claims the Ring and Remixes the Oath
Upon uncovering the truth, John Stewart faced a difficult moral choice. Noah, struggling with his internal programming and fearing what he might become if he gave in to his worst instincts, surrendered the ring and asked John to kill him. Rejecting vengeance, John refused to end Noah’s life, believing that Kerry’s parenting and Noah’s inherent capacity for goodness could prevail.

John took Hal’s old ring and a lantern infused with fear elements from Antaan’s planet, courtesy of Sinestro. Eschewing the traditional Green Lantern modus operandi and refusing to answer to the cosmic overlords, John called Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion, to Rushville to establish a new status quo. Declaring himself an independent contractor, John divided the workload by letting Guy take the stars while he took the dirt on Earth.
Drawing on final wisdom from Hal’s hologram, John rewrote the Green Lantern oath to embrace fear as a tool rather than suppress it. The moment cemented John’s rise as Earth’s definitive new Lantern ahead of his confirmed appearance in the upcoming 2027 film Man of Tomorrow.

Damon Lindelof and Tom King Discuss the Creative Vision
Behind the scenes, co-creators Damon Lindelof, Tom King, and Chris Mundy shaped the series to deliberately avoid superhero tropes. At a virtual press conference, King noted that one of their primary sticking points from day one was avoiding clichés. Lindelof explained that building a grounded story allowed the series to explore human themes of parental expectations and the struggle between nature and nurture.
Addressing fan questions about whether Kyle Chandler’s character could return via the ring’s hologram, Lindelof compared the idea to reviving Patrick Swayze in a sequel to Ghost, noting that doing so might diminish the emotional resonance of the finale. Meanwhile, HBO has not yet officially announced a second season for the series, leaving viewers to ponder the future of Sinestro and the remaining cosmic threads.
