Shetland Hot Tub Murder: Aren Pearson Jailed for Minimum of 25 years
A man who brutally murdered his girlfriend in a hot tub on the remote Shetland Islands has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 25 years. Aren Pearson,41,was convicted of the murder of Claire Leveque,24,following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh on Wednesday,February 14,2024.
The court heard harrowing details of the attack, which took place at Pearson’s mother’s home in Sandness on February 11, 2024. Ms. Leveque suffered at least 26 knife wounds, with 19 concentrated on her face and neck.
Pearson initially denied the murder, falsely claiming Ms.leveque had inflicted the wounds upon herself. However, he confessed to the horrific act multiple times – to a 999 operator, attending police officers, and hospital staff treating him for self-inflicted injuries. After the attack, Pearson chillingly told emergency services, “Hi, my name is Aren Pearson.I’ve just killed my girlfriend in the hot tub in the garage. I stabbed her about 40 times in the heart, stomach, face, neck and back. I stabbed myself in the neck four times.”
The prosecution presented evidence revealing a pattern of controlling and abusive behavior. A six-minute audio recording played to the jury captured Ms. Leveque confronting Pearson over an alleged assault on her 24th birthday. In the recording,Pearson responded with chilling callousness,stating,”You deserved every bit of it and more.Your lucky I didn’t bash your head in.” Despite this, Ms. Leveque poignantly told Pearson,”I love you,” before adding,”You are going to kill me.”
pearson attempted to portray Ms. leveque as having a drinking problem,alleging she had “drank too much” and that her alcohol consumption was causing issues in his life. He even suggested he wanted to send her back to her father in Winnipeg, Canada, with $200,000 acquired from “online investments.” He claimed she overheard a conversation with her father and reacted violently, grabbing a knife and stabbing herself in the hot tub. However,jurors rejected this account.
Following the murder, Pearson engaged in a series of desperate acts, consuming brake fluid and driving his Porsche into the ocean. His mother, who has since passed away, described him as looking like a “zombie” on the night of the incident, witnessing him confess to harming Ms. leveque before self-harming. Images released by the Crown Office show the wreckage of the Porsche being retrieved from the sea.
A medical professional, Dr. Caroline Heggie, testified that Pearson made a disturbing remark that resonated with her, stating, “He said ‘I’ve been trying to get rid of her for a while.'” A psychiatric assessment later steadfast Pearson was not suffering from any mental illness.
Following the conviction, Ms. Leveque’s cousin, Hope Ingram, paid tribute to her, describing her as a “bubbly, fun girl who brought life to every room that she walked into.” Ingram expressed relief that the trial was over, allowing the family to focus on remembering Claire’s vibrant spirit. “She wanted to live life and she was a breath of fresh air. I plan on remembering Claire by just trying to live life to the fullest,” she said.
Detective inspector Richard Baird emphasized the horrific nature of the violence and the evidence of a controlling relationship. “Our investigation uncovered evidence of a controlling and violent relationship with Claire Leveque, where Pearson sought to degrade and abuse her prior to her death,” he stated.”Thes actions and his actions after his violent attack which led to her death show him as a cruel and selfish individual and it is right that he will now face the consequences of what he has done.” He added that while the verdict cannot undo the tragedy, he hoped it would bring some measure of closure to ms. Leveque’s family.
