Jeon Ji-hee (32), a naturalized player and a leading figure in Korean women’s table tennis, gave up renewing her contract with her team Mirae Asset Securities and returned her Taegeuk symbol. In fact, he is in the process of retirement.

An official from the table tennis world told News 1 on the 27th, “Jeon Ji-hee will not renew her contract with Mirae Asset, whose contract ends this year, and has decided to give up the Taegeuk mark to her juniors. “Jeon Ji-hee, who has virtually finished her career as a player in Korea, is currently staying in China,” he said.

Jeon Ji-hee, who became naturalized in China in 2011 and wore the Taegeuk symbol on her chest, started a revival of Korean women’s table tennis with Shin Yu-bin (24, Korean Air).

At the Durban World Championships in May last year, she teamed up with Shin Yu-bin and won a silver medal in women’s doubles for the first time in 36 years.

Five months later, they won the women’s doubles gold medal for the first time in 21 years at the Hangzhou Asian Games, and at this year’s 2024 Paris Olympics, they broke through the blockage in Korean table tennis by collaborating on a bronze medal in the women’s team event.

Jeon Ji-hee, who led Korean table tennis in international competitions for about 10 years starting from the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, is now leaving the glory behind and putting down the Taegeuk mark.

Mirae Asset general manager Kim Taek-soo, who coached Jeon Ji-hee, explained, “I know she was under a lot of pressure because she had injuries and physical difficulties,” and added, “I also want to make room for younger Koreans when she is doing well.”

Jeon Ji-hee, ranked 17th in the world rankings of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), had secured the right to be selected for next year’s national team as her ranking points were in the top 3 among domestic players. However, as Jeon Ji-hee returns it, another player is scheduled to take over the position.
