Shinan County, ’20th 2026 World Island Academic Conference’ Shinan County Promotional Activities

Shinan County participated in the World Island Conference and began promotional activities for Shinan County. Shinan County (Governor Park Woo-ryang) announced that it attended the 19th 2024 World Island Conference held in Lombok, Indonesia from June 25 to 29 to promote the hosting of the 2026 World Island Conference.

The World Islands Conference is the world’s largest island-specialized academic conference held every two years in major overseas island regions by the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA), a global association of island research organizations, and is attended by approximately 2,000 experts from over 50 countries.

Shinan County, together with Jeollanam-do and Mokpo National University’s Library and Culture Research Institute, submitted a hosting proposal to ISISA headquarters in November of last year, and after fierce competition with four countries including Japan and the Caribbean, was selected to host the 2026 event.

The 20th World Island Conference, to be held in Sinan-gun in 2026, will be held for one week on Jaeun Island in Sinan-gun under the theme of ‘Climate Crisis, Island Resilience and Innovation.’

From June 25 to 29, during the World Island Conference in Lombok, Indonesia, we promoted Sinan, the host of the 20th World Island Conference in 2026, to experts from all over the world. In addition, on the last day of the conference, the 29th, Professor Hong Seon-gi of Mokpo National University, who presented about Sinan, the host of the 2026 conference, explained the ecological cultural diversity of Sinan County through harmony between its beautiful natural environment and humans.

In particular, the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, Sinan Tidal Flat, and Biosphere Reserve received a warm applause from the conference participants. Various field trip sites such as Jaeun Island, Hongdo, Gageodo, and Purple Island were introduced, receiving a warm applause from the participants from each country.

Park Woo-ryang, the governor of Sinan County, expressed his thoughts on successfully hosting the 2026 World Island Conference, saying, “Through the conference, I will strive to make Sinan County, which has a high level of biodiversity as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, a leader in the development of world islands and to make it an academic conference that introduces Korea’s beautiful islands to the world.”
