The honorary island designation system for cities, counties, and districts without islands in Shinan-gun has been established. Shinan-gun (Governor Park Woo-ryang) is actively promoting a system of sharing honorary islands with sister local governments without islands in order to promote the value of the islands and provide motivation to enjoy the natural environment of the 1004 Islands. Gageodo Island, located at the end, has been designated as Pyeongtaek Island, and currently has an honorary island relationship with 13 local governments.
Accordingly, Pyeongtaek City (Mayor Jeong Jang-seon) declared 2024 as the year of visiting Pyeongtaek’s island (Gageodo), and to commemorate this declaration, Pyeongtaek Mayor Jeong Jang-seon and other related officials held a 3-day, 2-night visit from the 27th to the 29th. He visited Gageo Island, the most distant island in Korea, 19 times, including a scheduled visit to Gageo Island, and received a lot of love from the residents.
Park Woo-ryang, Mayor of Shinan-gun, said, “Gageo Island is as far away from land as traveling to a foreign country, and transportation is inconvenient, but it is a mysterious and beautiful island that you must visit at least once in your life. Pyeongtaek City (Mayor Jeong Jang-seon) discovered its value and visited it several times. “We welcome the visiting group and thank them,” he said.
In addition, in Yeongdong-gun, where Bigeum Island was designated as an honorary island, during the Daffodil Festival last March, Yeongdong-gun Mayor Jeong Young-cheol and Yeongdong-gun Council members attended a hometown love donation ceremony, and social organizations such as Yeongdong-gun Saemaeul Association also visited more than a dozen times during each festival and event. Considering the influx of interest and inquiries about Shinan-gun’s ‘Honor Island Sharing System’, which started in 2020 for the first time in the country, it is said that it will be established as a divine policy that brings great hope to cities, counties and districts without islands nationwide.
