‘Shinan Manjaedo Columnar Joints’, formed 100 million years ago, has been designated as a natural monument. Shinan-gun announced that ‘Shinan Manjaedo Island Columnar Joints’ has been designated as a nationally designated cultural asset and natural monument.
‘Sinan Manjaedo Columnar Joint’ is a prominent form of columnar jointing in the tuff layer exposed along the entire coast of Manjaedo Island. Various types of columnar joints are distributed on the southeast coast of the island and the attached island Nokdo, and coastal erosion landforms (sea cliffs, sea caves, sea arches, etc.) formed by the action of waves and wind are developing.
Columnar joints measuring tens of meters are well developed on the coastal cliffs of Jangbawisan Mountain, southeast of Manjaedo Island. These boulders are late-stage tuffs created by volcanic activity during the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic Era (about 100 million years ago) and are of high academic value in relation to the formation process of welded tuff and volcanological features (pumice fragments, welded foliation).
‘Sinan Manjaedo Columnar Joints’ is a result of wave erosion, with clear hexagonal pillars and horizontally developed joints that blend well with the coastal erosion topography of Manjaedo to create an outstanding landscape. In recognition of its academic and scenic value, it was designated as a natural heritage monument. The Cultural Heritage Administration will announce the designation after a 30-day notice period.
Manjaedo Island is a remote island located 52km south of Heuksando Island and 105km away from Mokpo. The 70 residents live by collecting seaweed and fishing. Meanwhile, Manjaedo Island is also known as a filming location for the drama ‘Spring Waltz’ and the entertainment program ‘Three Meals a Day’ and is often visited by tourists for walking and fishing trips.
Shinan County Governor Park Woo-ryang said, “With the designation of Manjaedo Island as a columnar joint natural monument, we plan to publicize the value of Manjaedo Island, an excellent geological resource of Shinan, a World Natural Heritage area, and prepare ways to preserve and utilize it. In the future, we plan to promote the registration of the Heuksan area as a geopark. He announced that he would make continuous efforts.
