“They jumped first. We left to jump at the very end, when the vessel was sinking. It was a lot of struggle for us to survive and manage to catch the buoy. There was no time for anything”, reported Luiz Carlos Messias da Silva to NSC. He was the ship’s cook.
The crew’s belongings, such as cell phones and documents, were lost, according to Messias.
According to the cook, the boat sank after a strong wave. “We were working, everything was calm, and then there was a very violent wave”.
“It wasn’t easy for us. The sea was very thick, the waves very strong. And we were on that raft. But, thank God, we managed to escape”, added Luiz Carlos.

The Navy found five men around 10 pm yesterday about 160 km off the coast of Santa Catarina. According to authorities, all are in good health.
“The Thor Frigg vessel, under coordination of searches by Salvamar Sul, rescued alive and in good health, around 10 pm, five survivors of the fishing boat “Safadi Seif”, which sank off the coast of Santa Catarina, on 16 June,” the Navy said in a statement.

The shipwreck took place on Friday night (16), after the region was hit by a cyclone, which caused heavy storms on the coast of Santa Catarina. The vessel disappeared near Coral Island, south of Florianópolis, 45 minutes from Garopaba.
To speed up the search for other victims, the Navy reinforced the rescue team on Saturday. Two ships were added to the teams and another two are expected to join this Sunday. A plane and two helicopters that departed from Rio de Janeiro are also collaborating with the searches.
