After drifting for more than two months on an inflatable boat, a man was found alive in the Sea of Okhotsk, in the Russian Far East, along with two other people who unfortunately died.
The regional prosecutor’s office reported that on August 9, 2024, two adults and a 15-year-old teenager, the son of one of them, went sailing from the Khabarovsk region on the island of Sakhalin, on a Baikat 470 catamaran-type boat.

Without explaining the causes of the damage that led to the shipwreck, the prosecutor’s office reported that shortly after setting sail, communication with the vessel was lost.
It was the crew of a fishing boat called “Angel” who found the boat with the castaways in the waters of the Okhotsk Sea, about a thousand kilometers from where they had set sail, near a village on the Kamchatka Peninsula.
According to data from the Russian agency Ria Novosti, the man found alive on the inflatable boat was identified as Mikhail Pichugin, and the deceased are his brother Sergei, 49, and his nephew Ilia, 15.

The survivor’s wife took the news as “a miracle” and argued that he could have survived due to being overweight, since at the time of setting sail he weighed around 100 kilos and when he was found he weighed just 50 kilos.
