Shmulik Budgov’s solo show is actually a musical autobiography

by time news

Usually guitarists are not big things, they prefer to let the sounds of the guitar, their external body organ that is connected to the soul, speak for them. That’s how he is Shmulik Budgovfrom the most influential and respected guitarists and musicians in Israel, from the 1970s to the present day.

Budgov, owner of the guitar company “Budgov Instruments” in Tel Aviv, was at every possible junction in the local soundtrack: he was a member of rhythm bands, including the last incarnation of the Churchills; He played in the experimental progressive rock band Six; He was the guitarist of the Cypress band, which apart from its performances in “This is this!” Played on almost every possible album in the late 70’s and 80’s; He was a member of “Yehudim” and produced the band’s groundbreaking debut album “Separate Reality”; and played on countless albums.

His guitar solos can be found in songs like “It might be over” and “Mother Earth” by Eric Einstein; “As of today” by Zohar Argov; “Sivan” by Yigal Bashan; “I miss you here” by Nurit Galron; “Shemesh, Shemesh” by Ariel Zilber; “One more love story” by Shimi Tabori; “New Land” by Shlomo Artzi; And the list is endless.

Yesterday I was present at Budgov’s first solo show (“Budgov’s guitar – stations in my life”) at the “Guitar Loft” hall in Tel Aviv, during which he came with a talented group of musicians and singers, and for the first time put himself at the front, in a show that is a kind of theatrical cabaret that included all His great solos throughout his career, combined with his stories (from his own mouth) about working with the best artists, amusing curiosities and moments of nostalgia for friends who are not (chiefly Eric Einstein and Yigal Beshen), while throughout the evening he played three different guitars, giving a fresh and new interpretation to his legendary solos (which were preserved in excellent as always) and also paid respect to the creators and artists with whom he worked.

This is not a show of covers, nor a show of a guitarist playing well-known songs, but rather a musical autobiography on stage, in which Budgov provides an artistic glimpse of the house where he grew up, of his family (his father, Yom Tov, was a tar player and his uncle, Yosef Pelta, was one of the leading guitarists in Israel in the years 50’s and 60’s), to the musical influences and moments in and out of the studio with artists who redefined Israeli music.

All the hits I mentioned above and more were included in the well-made show, when Budgov, who doesn’t dig too much and timing and with a precise and sweet rhythm, manages to jump between stories and songs and especially to emotion and touch.

It is important for me to mention his excellent ensemble that accompanied the whole evening and contributed to its success: Adi Rennert (keyboards), his friend from the “Shesht” days, Gil Imer (bass, Nadav Melman (drums) and the excellent singers Paz Epstein and Raziel Manzor whose voices sound classic and complete the atmosphere that prevailed in the show – created unforgettable moments that every Israeli music lover (in general) will find pure pleasure in them.

The upcoming show will take place on May 20 at 21:30 at “Guitar Loft” (Shoken 27 Tel Aviv)
