Bitter news for FC Barcelona: Although the Catalans secured their third win in the third season match of La Liga, a potentially serious injury to young player Marc Bernal casts a shadow over the celebration. The 17-year-old midfielder had to leave the field supported by staff after a collision in stoppage time during the 2:1 victory against Rayo Vallecano.
According to Spanish media reports, Bernal is believed to have suffered an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament.
Barca Talent: Flick Fears Serious Injury
A video posted on X shows the jewel leaving the stadium on crutches and with a bandage on his left knee, barely able to put weight on his affected leg.
Already after the match, Barca coach Hansi Flick feared the worst: “It’s a sad victory because Marc Bernal is injured, and it doesn’t look good,” said the former Bayern coach during the subsequent press conference.
The 59-year-old added: “We have to wait and see how serious it is. We win, that’s okay – but when you look into the locker room, no one is happy.”
On Wednesday, Bernal will undergo further medical examinations to clarify the exact diagnosis of the injury.
“We are all with you,” tried new signing Dani Olmo, the match-winner against Rayo Vallecano, to offer comfort. Team-mate Gavi, who is also out for a long time due to a cruciate ligament tear, wrote on Instagram: “I know it’s hard, but I’m sure you’ll come back like a beast!”
Mega-Talent Bernal Could Remain Out for a Long Time
If the initial suspicion is confirmed, the teenager could miss a large part of the young season.
Bernal is regarded as one of the greatest talents in Spanish football and was the big winner of the summer preparation. So far, he has started in all three league matches. Flick had recently planned to integrate the Spanish U17 international into the midfield of the Blaugrana.
Bernal stands out particularly for his technical skills and good passing game. Furthermore, he has strong positional play and pronounced game intelligence.
