It is the heartbreaking story that the victim herself, a 29-year-old girl from the French town of Cherbourg, conveyed to the authorities and the doctors who treated her after suffering the ferocious attack perpetrated by Oumar N. The family of the victim has now taken the opportunity to to thank the messages of support received during the two weeks that have elapsed since the attack, as well as the work of the services involved in caring for the girl in a case that has shocked France.
The events occurred on August 4 and the information has gradually emerged since then as the investigation progresses, while the young woman remains in an induced coma struggling between life and death, according to the French media ‘Le Figaro’.
According to the victim’s own testimony, a man – whom she had seen but did not know – entered her home on August 4 and beat her and raped her several times, for which he even used a broomstick 75 centimeters. After the attack, doctors diagnosed the young woman with perforations in the colon, small intestine, peritoneum, and diaphragm, a pneumothorax, rib fractures, cyanosis of the chest, and elevated risk of septic shock.
“The victim has experienced an ordeal and has been massacred”, which forced her to operate for several hours and plunge her into an induced coma, a source close to the investigations recently explained to the French newspaper. The young woman’s injuries were of such magnitude that they forced a team of psychologists to support the hospital staff in charge of the treatment, since some of them “could not hold back their tears” when they learned of the injuries, according to the France Bleu radio station.
The assailant, an acquaintance of the authorities
On August 10, the investigations led to the arrest of a suspect: Oumar N. An automated fingerprint database (FAED) made it possible to attribute a trace, found by police officers at a door of the victim’s home, this 18 year old. This indication was later corroborated by another piece of evidence: the geolocation of the alleged attacker’s mobile phone at the time of the events.
A day later, Oumar N. was charged with “rape accompanied by torture or barbaric acts” and remanded in Caen prison. In police custody, he initially denied the facts before finally laconically admitting when confronted with the discovery of his fingerprint. “He did not show any emotion or empathy for the victim. He was cold during the entire police arrest,” a source close to the case told ‘Le Figaro’.
Oumar N. was an old acquaintance of the French Police and the courts. He had been sentenced five times by the juvenile judge for crimes of property damage and violence, according to the Coutances Prosecutor’s Office in a statement last Monday night. In fact, his record contained 17 charges, including robbery, manipulation of stolen objects, incestuous sexual assault and rebellion, according to information from French television BFMTV.

However, given the “unstable and worrying state of health” of the young woman, her relatives have not wanted to demonstrate publicly.
