ThiruvananthapuramThiruvananthapuram: Health Minister Veena George has ordered an inquiry into the death of a kidney transplant patient at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Relatives had alleged that the organ transplant was delayed. Based on this, the minister ordered an inquiry. The Minister directed the Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Health to immediately investigate and submit a report. Strict action will be taken against those who fall. He said a high-level meeting would be convened soon in connection with the incident.

The kidney was brought to Thiruvananthapuram from Kochi at 5.30 pm yesterday (June 19). However, relatives of the deceased alleged that the operation started four hours late at 9.30 pm. The relatives are making serious allegations against the hospital.

Minister Veena George has said that blood banks will be set up in more hospitals

Health Minister Veena George has said that blood banks will be set up in more hospitals as and when required. Blood banks have been set up in major hospitals in Kerala. Blood banks are functioning in medical colleges, general hospitals, district hospitals and selected taluk hospitals. There are 42 blood banks in government hospitals, 142 blood banks in private hospitals and 6 blood banks in co-operative hospitals.

Blood collection is also being done through the ‘Mobile Blood Bank’ as part of the voluntary blood donation drive in the state. In addition, ‘Blood Transportation’ vehicles are available in all districts to transport blood collected from blood donation camps to blood banks. It seeks to bring about timely modern changes in relation to blood banks. Kerala needs over 4 lakh units of blood a year. Of this, 78 per cent is collected from voluntary donors. Our goal is to have 100% of the blood needed by 2025 collected from voluntary blood donors.
