100 seconds from the end of the second match of the best-of-three series, Partizan led confidently 95:80 in the Spanish capital. The result seemed settled, and nothing foreshadowed any more excitement. And yet it turned out that we saw scenes that we have not seen before on the floors of the Euroleague established in 2000. “Is there anyone who hasn’t fought?” the judges then asked each other as they analyzed the video.
It started with an ugly foul by Real player Sergio Llulla on Partizan basketball player Kevin Punter. The American was hit in the face and, nervous, immediately moved towards the Spaniard. Their friends surrounded them and after a while a group of players was jostling in the middle of the dance floor. Unfortunately, the struggle didn’t end there.
Real Basketball player Guerschon Yabusele pulled the much smaller and physically weaker Dante Exum from Partizan out of the crowd. He grabbed him by the neck and threw him hard against the floor. It was definitely more like MMA or wrestling than a tight-knit on a basketball court.
– A high-amplitude suplex throw, i.e. 4 points for a Real Madrid player – jokingly assessed the president of the Polish Wrestling Association, Andrzej Supron, on Twitter. Unfortunately, Exum was not amused. He left the hall with the help of his colleagues, he injured his leg.
The guests did not owe the hosts. The punter punched Real’s Dzanan Musa in the face, and the Bosniak was further knocked down by Matthias Lessort. Several players tried to land boxing punches, others took part in scuffles. The most passionate were Punter and Yabusele. The latter was eventually stopped by two people in the audience (presumably relatives or friends) who ran onto the pitch and even pushed him into the locker room.
The whole thing lasted less than a minute, excluding the ensuing lively parts of both sides’ discussions. The judges spent much more time analyzing replays. They were a hard nut to crack. According to the rules, anyone who leaves the bench area during a fight should be disqualified.
After analyzing the situation, as many as 21 players were disqualified – 10 from Real and 11 from Partizan. Partizan’s Zach Leday, Real Madrid’s Vincent Poirier and… Llull were not among them. The latter, however, received an unsportsmanlike offence.
The referees announced that in this situation the match would not be completed because the teams ran out of players. The players went to the locker rooms with the score 95:80 for Partizan, which was held. The team from Belgrade leads 2-0 in the quarter-finals. The next match will be played at home on May 2.
Probably Real will play weakened, because it would be strange if even Yabusele was not suspended. It can also be assumed that the basketball players from Madrid will receive a not very friendly welcome. The capital of Serbia is always noisy, and in the current situation, the atmosphere should be extremely hot.
In the other quarter-finals, it’s also interesting, but not so nervous. AS Monaco won 86:74 against Maccabi Tel Aviv and equalized at 1-1. Earlier in the first matches, Olympiacos Piraeus defeated Fenerbahce Istanbul 79:68 and FC Barcelona 91:69 Zalgiris Kaunas.
