During the 1960s in Denmark-occupied Greenland, an incident involving sterilization of 13-year-old girls to control the indigenous population was revealed, causing great controversy in the country. Danish doctors implanted intrauterine devices (IUS) in women from Greenland’s Inuit group to improve health and prevent childbirth among indigenous people. Some women are said to have agreed to this.
Last week, Danish Health Minister Magnus Hunig announced that the scandal would be investigated. He said that he has met and spoken to some of the affected women. He said he could still feel the physical and mental pain he went through.
The matter came to public attention when two journalists from the national broadcaster DR discussed it during a podcast conversation with Spiralkampchen. What is surprising is that the campaign for IUD implantation was not carried out in secret. But it took decades for women to talk about it. But now this issue has exploded into a political issue.

An estimated 4,500 women and girls have been fitted with an IUD as a contraceptive device. People are strongly debating the patriarchal and racist sentiments behind this. However, it was hailed as a major ‘success’ in the 1972 issue of Family Planning magazine.
Notably, Greenland became an integral part of Denmark in 1953. Denmark then began to take greater steps in the modernization of infrastructure and social services. Danish workers (mostly men) migrated to less populated areas. Within the last few years, the birth rate in Greenland was very high. Notably, it had one of the highest birth rates in the world with 25% of the population born out of wedlock, with half of the population under the age of 16.
