Jehovah’s Witnesses had been meeting since 7 p.m. for a weekly Bible study meeting, according to the daily Hamburg evening paper. The police “were called around 9:15 p.m. to report shots fired in the building” of three floors, located in the district of Gross Borstel, north of the second largest city in Germany, reported a police spokesman on the NTV channel. The intervention forces have “entered the building very quickly and found dead and seriously injured people there”, according to this spokesperson.

According to several media, the population of the port city has been warned of a “extreme danger” via the disaster alert app, with police calling to avoid the affected area. “Take shelter immediately in a building”adds the message asking to “only call in the event of an extreme emergency, so as not to overload the lines”. The mayor of the city Peter Tschentscher presents himself “sincere condolences to the families of the victims”, on Twitter (in German).
