Bangkok: 34 people, including 22 children, were killed in a mass shooting at a day care center in the northeastern province of Thailand. The police spokesperson said that among those killed were children and adults.

The government spokesperson said that the assailant is a former police officer and efforts are being made to find the suspect who escaped. He added that the Prime Minister warned all the agencies to investigate the incident and take necessary action and nab the culprit.

Thailand has a higher rate of gun ownership compared to some other countries in the region. But official figures do not include much information on illegal weapons. Many of them are imported from neighboring countries.

Mass shootings are rare here. But in 2020, a soldier angry over a property deal killed 29 people and injured 57 others.
