Five people were killed and at least 18 others were injured after a mass shooting Saturday night at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States, according to the local police department. The suspect is in custody and is being treated in hospital on Sunday morning, authorities said.
The police received numerous messages from 11:57 p.m. Saturday evening, and 11 ambulances went to the scene. According to local media, the motive for the shooting is not yet known and the police declined to say what type of firearm was used. It is also unclear if the suspect is included in the tally of those injured in the shooting.
The establishment, Club Q, posted on Facebook that it was “devastated by the senseless attack on our community”. He also offered his condolences to the victims and their families. Thanks to their “heroic reaction”, some customers managed to control the shooter, the nightclub still indicates.
Trans Remembrance Day
The club had announced an LGBTQ event on Saturday, a night “with all kinds of gender identities and performance styles” on the occasion of the Trans Day of Remembrance celebrated on November 20 internationally. Colorado Springs police will hold an early morning press conference this Sunday on the shooting.
On June 12, 2016, an American of Afghan origin, Omar Mateen, killed 49 people and injured around fifty others in a gay club in Orlando (Florida), the Pulse, perpetrating the worst attack in the United States since those September 11, 2001. US President Joe Biden marked the fifth anniversary of the Orlando massacre last year by announcing that the club would become a national memorial.
