‘Korean soccer legend’ Park Ji-sung revealed the reason why he accepted the position of general manager of the new club.
At the media conference for Coupang Play’s new entertainment show ‘Shooting Star‘ held at Stanford Hotel Korea in Mapo-gu, Seoul on the 14th, Park Ji-sung said, “When I was offered the position of general manager, my first thought was, ‘Have I gotten too old?'”
Park Ji-sung said, “The direction this team is pursuing, the hope of arousing the passion of the players, the idea that the K-League can be better known to a wider fan base, and that the players can also be directly and more deeply shown what soccer is like. “I accepted it after hearing it,” he said.
He continued, “The players are working with more passion than I expected,” and “Coach Yongsoo Choi said he would show the image of an ‘awake leader,’ and that will be the biggest point that many people will feel while watching.” “It is,” he said.
Park Ji-sung said, “What I hope for from the players is that if they have any lingering regrets, it will be an opportunity to shake off those things a little more.” He added, “If they make up their own minds again, wouldn’t they be able to do something? “I hope that many opportunities will be opened (for players),” he explained.
‘Shooting Star’ is a soccer entertainment show in which retired soccer players gather together in the new club ‘FC Shooting Star’ led by general manager Park Ji-sung, coach Choi Yong-soo, and coach Seol Ki-hyun to challenge themselves to play in the K-League once again.
Producer Jo Hyo-sook, who directed ’Running Man’ and ‘The Zone’, and writers Park Hyun-sook and Kim Hye-rim worked together to depict the passionate passion and new challenges of players for whom soccer was everything.
The program focused on ‘FC Shooting Star’ and eight teams from the K4 League competing against each other for promotion and relegation next season in the ‘Legend League’, which adopts a promotion and relegation system.
Goalkeeper Kim Young-kwang, who has played in a total of 605 games, serves as the team captain, London Olympic bronze medalist Kim Chang-soo and 2002 World Cup national team member Hyun Young-min play left and right fullbacks, and Kang Min-soo, who played in more than 30 games for the national team, takes charge of central defense.
Midfielders who will be key to the team’s tactics include Ko Yo-han, a legendary one-club man for FC Seoul and the club’s first player to permanently retire, and Kwon Soon-hyung, a K-League representative regista, who will coordinate the entire game.

Interview Between Time.news Editor and Soccer Expert Park Ji-sung
Time.news Editor: Good evening, Park Ji-sung! Thank you for joining us today. There’s a lot of excitement surrounding your new role as the general manager of FC Shooting Star. To begin, what drove you to accept this position?
Park Ji-sung: Thank you for having me! When I was first offered the role, my immediate thought was, “Have I gotten too old for this?” But as I learned more about the vision for the team—revitalizing player passion and raising the profile of the K-League—I felt compelled to take on this challenge.
Editor: It sounds like a transformative opportunity not just for you, but for the league and the players involved. Can you share a bit about your expectations for the team?
Park Ji-sung: Absolutely. What I really hope for is that the players can confront any lingering regrets they may have from their careers. I want them to find closure and rediscover their love for the game. If they can reconnect with their passion, I believe amazing things can happen.
Editor: That’s a powerful mindset. You mentioned that the players are displaying more passion than you expected. How do you cultivate that spirit as their manager?
Park Ji-sung: It starts with creating an environment where players feel supported and motivated. Coach Yongsoo Choi and I emphasize a leadership style that inspires—he’s described himself as an “awake leader,” and I think that will resonate with viewers and players alike. We want to showcase that determination can lead to new opportunities.
Editor: Your approach emphasizes both emotional and tactical aspects of the game. Speaking of tactics, can you highlight some key players in your lineup who will be crucial to your strategy?
Park Ji-sung: Certainly! Our captain, Kim Young-kwang, is incredibly experienced, having played over 605 games. He’s complemented by former Olympic medalist Kim Chang-soo and 2002 World Cup participant Hyun Young-min in defense. In the midfield, we have legends like Ko Yo-han, who has a storied history with FC Seoul, and Kwon Soon-hyung, who brings exceptional coordination to our gameplay. Their combined experience and skill are vital for our success.
Editor: It sounds like the team has a solid foundation with both experienced players and a focus on mentorship. How do you envision the new entertainment show ‘Shooting Star’ will impact the perception of soccer in Korea?
Park Ji-sung: “Shooting Star” is more than just an entertainment show; it’s a narrative about second chances and the relentless pursuit of dreams. We want to draw in both soccer enthusiasts and casual viewers by showcasing the intense dedication of our players. If we can show the human side of football—the struggles, the triumphs—it will help bridge the gap between the players and the fans.
Editor: It sounds like the show will offer a deep dive into both the sport and its players. With the competition aspect bringing together teams from the K4 League, how do you see this affecting the future of the K-League?
Park Ji-sung: The inclusion of a promotion and relegation system through the “Legend League” adds a new layer of excitement and competitiveness. It creates a pathway for raw talent to emerge and for the league to become known not just nationally, but internationally. I truly believe this will elevate the profile of soccer in Korea.
Editor: Exciting times for both you and the league! Before we wrap up, what’s your message to fans who are eager to watch “Shooting Star” and support FC Shooting Star?
Park Ji-sung: I want fans to know that this team is built on passion, teamwork, and the love for soccer. We are determined to give it our all, and we hope viewers will feel our commitment and enthusiasm as they watch. Let’s enjoy this journey together!
Editor: Thank you, Park Ji-sung! Your vision and passion for the game truly shine through. We can’t wait to see how FC Shooting Star unfolds. Best of luck in your new endeavor!
Park Ji-sung: Thank you! I appreciate the support and look forward to sharing our journey with everyone.
