Shootout Controversy in Hockey Semi; The International Hockey Federation apologized

by time news

Birmingham: The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has apologized for the shootout controversy in the Commonwealth Games women’s hockey semi-finals.

The controversial incident took place during the semi-final match between the Indian women’s hockey team and the Australian women on Friday. India had lost 3-0 in the long match to the penalty shootout.

The match went to a penalty shootout after both teams scored one goal each at the stipulated time. The controversial decision occurred on the first kick of the shootout. Indian goalkeeper Savita saved the first kick taken by Aussie Ambrosia Malone. But the Aussies asked the team to kick again on the grounds that the officials had forgotten to turn on the countdown timer while taking the kick. Malone also scored on the second try. This is what led to the controversy.

‘The penalty shootout in the semi-final match between India Women and Australia Women at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games was mistakenly started early (the countdown timer had not started). We apologize for that. The procedure in such situations is to re-take the penalty kick, and that is what was done. FIH will thoroughly review this incident to avoid similar issues in the future.’ – FIH said in a statement.
