Shootout races led to tragedy

When people talk about death on the runway, the most common cause of the tragedy is an accident with an airplane.

But it happens that the planes have nothing to do with it, as happened during the so-called drag racing (semi-legal “elimination races”), which took place on the runway of the airport in Kerville-Kerr County (Texas). One of the drivers lost control of the car and ran into a crowd of spectators, several thousand of whom watched the race called “Airport Race-2”. The accident killed two boys 6 and 8 years old and eight people received injuries of varying severity, including a 46-year-old woman, whose condition was assessed as critical.

On the website of the Office of Tourism and Conventions in Kerville, the event was presented as “an eventful day for the whole family”, during which spectators can watch “the fastest car races, the winners of which will receive more than $ 8,000 in prize money.” According to police figures, the number of spectators exceeded 3,500.

The track was one mile long and was marked with water-filled plastic bottles, a local newspaper reporter attending the races said. But outside of the track, this barrier was not, and spectators could approach it within 15 feet, although the organizers of the race warned them to stay on the lawn and not go onto the asphalt surface. The driver of the car involved in the accident was already at the end of the track when his car left the lane.
