November 1, All Saints’ Day, is a public holiday in Hungary, and moreover, it falls on a Friday, so it thoroughly upsets the usual shopping schedule of families.
Larger grocery stores, such as Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, Auchan and Spar, as well as all shopping centers will be closed on this day.
It is therefore worth planning in advance the purchase of the most important food items, because in most places the shops do not reopen as usual until November 2, the Day of the Dead.
Almost everything will be closed
On November 1, All Saints’ Day, not only larger stores are closed, but also smaller stores in shopping centers. On Thursday, October 31, however, we can still shop according to the usual opening hours. On November 2, Day of the Dead, all shops return to normal.
It is important to note that flower shops are particularly busy at this time as many people visit cemeteries. And at certain petrol stations and smaller 24/7 shops, basic food and other refreshments will still be available for purchase.
Exceptions open on November 1st
- gas stations: many gas station shops (e.g. Spar Express, Fresh Corner) will be open
- 24-hour shops and tobacconists, where the owner or a member of his family works
- pharmacies according to the duty schedule
- some newsstands may also be open
- independent flower shops
- cemeteries
All Saints’ Day and the Day of the Dead is also a time of remembrance and family programs. Many people visit cemeteries at this time to light candles at the graves of their loved ones, so flower shops and places selling candles can be busy in the days before and after the holiday. You can also expect increased traffic around the cemeteries, so it is worth planning your trip in advance and leaving on time – says Mindmegette in his article.
