Shortage of Care Places at Norrland University Hospital Causes Strained Situation

The Norrland University Hospital (Nus) in Umeå is experiencing a shortage of care places, leading to a strained situation in recent weeks. The overcrowding has caused the hospital to go into high alert, the second highest level, on June 29. Patients were even forced to be treated in the emergency room due to lack of space. However, the pressure has slightly eased towards the end of last week.

Magnus Hedström, the area manager in Region Västerbotten, stated that the weekend had been tolerable in terms of patient load. There were 17 regular vacant nursing places at Nus in Umeå and occasional places available at other hospitals in the region. Despite the slight improvement, the hospital is still in reinforcement mode and will assess the situation again on Wednesday.

Hedström believes that historically, the situation tends to calm down after week 27. He described how the hospital has been functioning well with “many small streams” of work. However, a specialist doctor from Nus who wished to remain anonymous disagreed and described the previous week as “hell”. The doctor revealed that there were twice as many satellite patients as there were beds in their ward. They expressed concerns about not having enough time to provide adequate care to all patients and stated that some patients had to stay overnight in the emergency room.

Two anonymous doctors, one from Nus and another from a different department, agreed that the region’s perception of round times for doctors to see patients was unrealistic. They highlighted the heavy workload and the pressure to admit more patients despite limited resources. The doctors expressed exhaustion and anxiety over the responsibility they have while not having enough support staff.

Hedström acknowledged the criticism and mentioned that some departments were able to provide extra support, but others were not. He also agreed that there is a shortage of nurses, which is causing staffing issues at the hospital. Hedström emphasized that hiring and retaining nurses is a top priority.

The doctors proposed solutions such as increasing the number of care places, addressing staffing shortages, and providing better support and coordination for patient care. They also mentioned the need for action beyond holding meetings. Hedström understood their concerns and acknowledged that more needs to be done to alleviate the strain on the hospital.

In conclusion, the shortage of care places at Norrland University Hospital has resulted in a highly strained situation. Although the situation has slightly improved, the hospital is still in reinforcement mode and under high alert. The doctors are calling for increased resources and support to ensure patient safety and provide better care.
