The Iranian Medical Council (IMS) warned of an acute shortage of doctors in the country’s health system and called on politicians not to downplay the problem of the growing emigration of doctors, DPA reported.

“The issue of doctor emigration is not only pessimistic… we absolutely need clear and realistic solutions to prevent an acute shortage of doctors in the near future,” warned the head of the medical body, Mohamed Rais-Zadeh, today.

According to Rais-Zadeh, the problem is already having a negative impact on the field of pediatric surgery. If something is not done soon, foreign surgeons will have to be brought to the country, he said, BTA reported.

“After that, it will have a negative impact on the entire healthcare system in the country,” Rais-Zadeh said, IRNA news agency reported.

The problem of emigrating specialists has increased dramatically since the beginning of the presidency of Ebrahim Raisi in 2021. The main reason for this is the ongoing economic crisis in the country, DPA points out.

Iranians accuse Raisi and his arch-conservative government of plunging the country into chaos with their uncompromising policy towards the West. Many Iranians no longer see a future for themselves and their families and want to emigrate to the West.

Many Iranian doctors and nurses who have better job opportunities abroad have already emigrated.
