A shortage of the rabies vaccine has occurred due to supply problems at two manufacturers, leading to potential delays in vaccination until January 2024, according to the GGD. The increased demand caused by production issues has left one producer unable to meet the needs of the market.

In order to manage the limited availability of the vaccine, it will now be reserved for individuals who have encountered an incident during their travels and require immediate or follow-up treatment.

For travelers who still need to complete their vaccination series, the GGD advises contacting them to inquire about the possibility of obtaining the vaccine.

Minimizing the Risk

To reduce the risk of rabies, the GGD recommends taking precautionary measures. The health organization advises individuals to avoid any contact with live or dead animals.

The virus can be transmitted by animals like dogs, cats, monkeys, and bats through scratching, biting, or licking. In case of such an incident, the GGD suggests cleaning the wound thoroughly with soap, Betadine, or alcohol. Even if individuals have been vaccinated, it is advised to immediately contact the emergency center of their health insurance company.

According to the GGD, approximately 60,000 people worldwide die from rabies each year. Fortunately, the virus does not occur among animals in the Netherlands.
