Shot dead his 16-year-old daughter after he thought she was breaking into

Janna Hairstone, 16, of Ohio, was fatally shot by her father after he thought she was a burglar who entered their home, according to documentation obtained by NBC News.

Hairstone died Wednesday at a Columbus hospital, about an hour after she was shot in the garage of her parents’ home in Piper Band Drive. In documenting the eight-minute emergency call, Hairstone’s mother said her husband accidentally shot their daughter. The hysterical mother begged for an ambulance when a man in the background repeatedly said, “Breathe, baby.”

“My husband made a mistake and shot her because he thought she was breaking in,” the mother said. “She was in our garage and my husband just did not know what was going on. Oh, God.” The mother said she thought the girl was shot in the chest. In the background you could hear both parents asking themselves and the girl what she had done in the garage.

Police arrived at the home about six minutes after the call was made and a subsequent tweet stated that no indictments had been filed and the case was handed over to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office for investigation. The shooting came days after a North Carolina police officer shot his 15-year-old son in the head in what was apparently an accident.
