NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has rejected a plea seeking renaming of all cities and places of historical importance named after ‘smugglers’. The petition was filed by BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay.

In the petition, Upadhyay also demanded that the commission be appointed to find out the real names of the historically, religiously and culturally important places.

However, a bench comprising Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagaratna questioned the intent of the PIL. The bench considered that such petitions would inflame the country’s problems.

“The history of the country should not haunt the people and future generations. Hinduism is a way of life. Bigotry has no place in it. You don’t have to go through history to find facts that break the friendly atmosphere. The Supreme Court pointed out that there should not be a situation where the country is boiling. The BJP leader had raised allegations in the petition that the central government, which had recently renamed Mughal Garden at Rashtrapati Bhavan to Amrit Udyan, had not taken any steps to change the names of roads and other roads in the country.
