PDamn, four years! For the candidates for the succession of Emmanuel Macron, who does not represent himself in 2027, time management is one of the most delicate data in the equation. Until when to stay on board the Macronian ship which, as the dead line, can take on water? Is it more relevant to prepare for the presidential election inside or outside? Should we shine and stand out, or remain cautiously in the background?
At Bercy for six years, Bruno Le Maire seems to be experiencing a period of hesitation, linked to these questions. The Minister of the Economy, who fears being overtaken by the consequences of “whatever the cost”, while he presents himself as a supporter of the serious budget, gives the impression of looking for a pretext to break, and not get damaged. Relatives advise him to leave without delay an executive with limited room for maneuver, under the combined effects of the loss of majority and unpopularity. “We all need a line of flight”he slipped on April 22 in The Sunday newspaperreferring to the publication of a new novel.
Gérald Darmanin is not crossed by the same torments. The Minister of the Interior has always mentioned 2024 – after the Europeans and the Olympic Games – as a first moment of a break, not before. “It’s too early for the fight”he told the Mondein the summer of 2022. The first to pretend to want to cross the ” Red line “ sera ” disabled “he repeats, adding “before time, it’s not time”. He must first obtain results, also hoping that the five-year term will be credited with some success. “If the president misses, there will be no successor in the president”he asserts.
Risk of scattering
Outside, former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, who left first, is launched into an interminable long-distance race. The most popular but also the least exposed, it must hold up over time. For now, he has chosen the “Pilgrim’s Staff Strategy”, crisscrossing under the radars of France’s sub-prefectures. The mayor of Le Havre takes care of elected officials, works on ideas (he writes a book) and organizes his party (Horizons). And he is silent, withdrawn from the show “disappointing” (says a relative) that political life has been for a year, convinced that there is nothing to build on this quicksand.
His successor, Jean Castex, who said when he left Matignon that he was going back to his house to “repaint its shutters”, cultivates a Pomidolian profile. But if he thinks of 2027, the former Prime Minister refuses to organize himself and first wants to succeed at the head of the RATP, which he intends to make the laboratory of “castexism” (social dialogue and proximity). Within the majority, he has fans. Including the budget minister, who likes to imagine him at the Elysée, when he is not thinking of himself.
