Cobie Smulders, who played Robin Scherbatsky beside Jason Segel’s Marshall Eriksen in the beloved early-2000s sitcom, reunited with Segel on the Apple TV+ comedy, which Segel co-created.
In the episode titled “Changing Patterns,” Smulders portrays Sofi, a single mother who’s selling her bright yellow Mini Cooper, the one jimmy (Segel) desperately wants to buy for his daughter Alice’s (Lukita Maxwell) 18th birthday gift.
Their on-screen connection is instantaneous, driven by Jimmy’s explanation that Alice adored her mom’s old ride and he wants to get his daughter the same model for a special birthday present.
Their initial interaction unfolds in typical Shrinking fashion:
Sofi’s response: “Oh, of course she is. Cool.I mean, not cool. My ex-husband is dead…to me; that was bad. I do that joke a lot, but I say it in a funnier way. I go,‘He’s dead… to me.’ Yeah, itS the same thing.”
They continue with playful banter. Sofi explains that her ex left her for her best friend and that now she drops their child off at what used to be her best friend’s house every othre weekend.
“I helped hang that bitch’s wallpaper,” Sofi shares.“There’s not a single bubble in it.”
in true therapist fashion, Jimmy says no: "you both can be sad without this being a competition." Still, Sofi points out that Jimmy can keep the good memories of his late wife, while her memories of her ex-husband are tainted because he wronged her.
“I have so much anger,” Sofi reveals.“I feel like I’m stuck. it’s gonna be easier for you to move on eventually.”
Jimmy counters that she doesn’t seem to have that much anger.
"Sometimes," he says, reflecting on his grief for his late wife, "for me, moving on feels unfeasible."
“I have so much anger,” Sofi admits. "I feel like I’m stuck. It’s going to be easier for you to move on eventually,” she states.
Jimmy tells her she doesn’t seem to have as much anger as she thinks. "Sometimes, for me, even though it feels impossible," he tells her, tommy’s death is still such a raw wound.
