Shubman Gill Duck and Top-Order Collapse Leave India Struggling Against New Zealand

Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill endured the first golden duck of his 72-match ODI career on November 7, 2026, falling to New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy on the very first delivery at Wellington. The dismissal triggered a top-order collapse that left India struggling under 50 runs for four wickets.

Playing in the second ODI at Wellington, Gill walked to the crease. He immediately edged a good-length delivery from Duffy around the off stump, sending the ball straight to Henry Nicholls in the second slip.

The opening-ball dismissal marked Gill’s first golden duck in international one-day cricket since his format debut in 2019. This brings his total career ODI ducks to two following a prior scoreless exit against Australia in 2023.

Top-Order Collapse Stuns Wellington

Chasing a modest target of 134 runs in a match reduced to 47 overs per side due to adverse weather and rain, the visitors stumbled early. Following Gill’s departure, veteran batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma failed to provide stability.

Kohli managed seven runs from seven deliveries. He fell to Duffy in the fourth over.

Sharma contributed 23 runs off 28 balls with two sixes before Kyle Jamieson removed him in the ninth over. Axar Patel added just seven runs from 17 deliveries, caught off Matt Fisher in the 13th over as India slumped past four quick wickets.

Indian Bowlers Restrict New Zealand Earlier

Before the run chase, Indian bowlers had restricted New Zealand to 134 runs in 41 overs. Gurnur Brar spearheaded the attack with a career-best spell, conceding 30 runs and taking four wickets across 10 overs.

Aaqib Nabi claimed two wickets for 31 runs in seven overs. Anshul Kamboj picked up two wickets while giving up 25 runs in eight overs.

Arshdeep Singh bowled seven economical overs for 16 runs without taking a wicket, as the bowling unit accumulated 176 dot balls. Daryl Mitchell anchored the New Zealand innings with an unbeaten 55 runs from 104 balls, supported by captain Mitchell Santner with 31 runs off 38 balls as the pair added 59 runs for the seventh wicket.

Social Media Reacts to Dropped Catch

During New Zealand’s innings in the 17th over bowled by Kamboj, Gill dropped a straightforward catch at mid-off offered by Mitchell, giving the batsman a lifeline as reported by BigTvLive. The missed opportunity prompted online discussion, with social media users circulating edited footage attempting to link senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to aggressive reactions over the fielding error.

BigTvLive noted that neither senior player verbally berated the captain on the field during the incident, as the circulating videos were retroactively repurposed from past matches involving Kuldeep Yadav.
