Team India captain Shubman Gill smashed the fastest double century in men’s ODI history off just 117 deliveries, powering a record-breaking eight-wicket victory against the West Indies in Guwahati on Wednesday and sealing an unassailable lead in the three-match series.
Gill’s Record-Breaking Double Century and the Historic Opening Stand
Team India captain Shubman Gill created history on Wednesday by becoming the fastest batsman to score a double century in men’s ODI cricket. The India captain reached the milestone in just 117 balls against the West Indies, surpassing Ishan Kishan’s previous mark of 126 balls against Bangladesh set in December 2022.
Gill dominated the spinners with precise footwork and wristy strokes, bringing up his 11th ODI hundred in 62 balls before accelerating into record territory. His breathtaking knock pushed Kishan to second on the all-time list for the fastest ODI double centuries, followed by Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka, and West Indies great Chris Gayle.
Rohit Sharma Joins Elite Company and Drives the Chase
Opening alongside his captain, Rohit Sharma delivered a masterclass of his own. The right-hander struck 101 from 75 balls, relying on his familiar pull and pick-up shots while piercing the off-side field.

Before reaching his century, Rohit Sharma completed 12,000 ODI runs, becoming only the seventh batter overall and the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to reach the milestone. Together, Gill and Rohit put on a staggering 255-run opening stand from just 26.2 overs, marking the first time an opening partnership crossed the 200-run mark during an ODI chase of more than 350 runs.
West Indies’ Triple Centurion Total and Record Run-Fest
The historic chase was necessitated by a formidable batting display from the visitors earlier in the day. The West Indies amassed 405/7 on a flat Barsapara pitch in Guwahati, becoming the first team in ODI history to feature three centurions in the same innings.
- John Campbell set the tone by smashing 101 from 68 deliveries, bringing up his hundred in just 65 balls with nine fours and five sixes.
- Shai Hope capitalized on a dropped catch by Virat Kohli on 27 to score 104 from 94 balls.
- Amir Jangoo provided an explosive late surge with an unbeaten 114 off 77 balls, reaching his century in 69 deliveries.
India’s Highest Successful Target Chase in History
Facing an imposing target of 406, India crossed the finish line at 406/2 in 43.3 overs, registering the highest successful ODI chase in the nation’s history.

With this eight-wicket triumph, India secured an unassailable lead in the three-match series, backed by a batting performance that rewrote the record books while handling testing conditions for the bowling attack.
