Shufersal invests in charging stations and smart carts

by time news

Following the increase in the number of electric vehicles that enter the Israeli road every year, Shufersal is launching a collaboration with EV-Edge, which provides charging stations. As of this month, the company operates 18 charging stations in three branches of the food retailer, and is expected to install additional stations.

According to Sharga Katz, CEO of EV-Edge, “the Israeli buyer spends an average of one to two hours on the weekly grocery shopping, and during this time the vehicle can charge for about 50-100 km.” Since its establishment in 2019, the company has deployed about 8,500 charging points throughout the country, and it operates about 1,000 public charging points.

Another move that Shufersal is leading is the expansion of cooperation with the Shopic company, under which 2,000 smart shopping carts will be deployed in 30 branches by the end of the first quarter of 2023. The scope of the investment during this period is several million shekels.

Shopic’s system is built as a clip-on device for the existing cart, which eliminates the need to upgrade the stores’ infrastructure. The add-on is based on artificial intelligence and computer vision algorithms, so it identifies the items that have been put in and taken out of the cart with 99.4% accuracy.

Advertisements, product offers and sponsored content can be displayed on the screen, depending on the customer’s buying habits. In addition, the screen allows payment without the need to wait in line at the cash register. According to the company, the payment takes less than a minute, compared to an average of 3.5 minutes at a self-service checkout and 9 minutes at a regular checkout.

Shopik was founded in 2015 by Raz Golan (the current CEO), Eran Kravitz and Dan Bandler. The company raised $35 million, employs approximately 80 people, and conducted pilots in large supermarket chains in North and South America.

According to Golan, “The collaboration with Shufersal marks a significant milestone in the global smart shopping cart industry. As of today, no other company has reported the deployment of smart carts on a commercial scale. The move positions us as a leader in the field of smart shopping carts, and fulfills our vision for the future The shopping experience”.

Uri Waterman, CEO of Shufersal, points out that “Shopik provides a technological solution that enables all the advantages of buying online in physical stores, in a personalized, efficient and fully transparent manner, without the need to wait in line at the checkout. The artificial intelligence embedded in the technology allows us to improve the experience according to the consumption habits of our customers.”

Gitam is establishing a branding unit

In an attempt to increase the number of customers and appeal to players who are not traditional advertisers, Gitam Group is launching an independent branding unit under the name Eureka. According to Ado Har-Tov, CEO of Gitam, the move allows the group to “approach new audiences, including start-ups, as well as offer employer branding and expansion of the marketing value to companies that advertise, and those that don’t.”

Among the unit’s existing clients are El Al (for which the new branding was launched this week), Shufersal, the Lottery, Eden Water, Soda Stream Global, TLV Mall, the Giraffe chain and the Nature and Parks Authority. The unit is headed by Merav Peled, and it has 10 employees.

Lior Tanner, director of the Gitam BBDO advertising agency, points out that “specialized branding companies have recently taken an increasing share of companies’ marketing budgets, and are responsible for huge cross-company moves. In addition, a trend of interest has begun among the large consulting firms, as a tool to expand the value proposition, and one of the companies even was purchased. An independent branding unit allows us to provide a dedicated and exclusive basket of services, using advanced tools, to a wider range of customers.”
