The speakers at this meeting, which took place at the stand of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication under the theme “gender approach in the national media field”, stressed that the presence of women in the media world in Morocco has experienced a remarkable evolution in recent years. However, it remains necessary to strengthen their presence in decision-making positions so that they can participate in the development of the editorial lines of the media in which they work.
Speaking on this occasion, journalist Hasnaa El Akkani, deputy regional editor-in-chief at the Maghreb Arab Press Agency (MAP), affirmed that the status of women journalists within the Agency has been marked by a considerable evolution in recent years, explaining that MAP has taken a series of measures to promote the position of its women journalists, in accordance with the High Guidelines of His Majesty King Mohammed VI aimed at consolidating the status of women in all areas.
In this regard, Ms. El Akkani specified that MAP attaches great importance to the principle of parity in employment and access to positions of responsibility, which has been reflected in particular through the appointment of women journalists to head many of the Agency’s editorial divisions and services.
Referring to the establishment in 2019 of the MAP Parity Committee as a mechanism to strengthen the place of women within the Agency, she highlighted the firm determination of the MAP General Management to promote female leadership and to create the right conditions for women to be able to carry out their missions.
She also stressed the need to strengthen the involvement of journalists in the defense of women and their causes, considering that “women are the best defenders of women.”
For her part, journalist Amina Gharib focused on the significant leap in the representation of women journalists in media institutions in recent years, particularly in public media institutions, which has contributed to improving the image of women journalists in society.
She stressed that women are now turning to journalism by choice and conviction, as evidenced by the strong female presence in journalism training institutes, adding that women journalists have shown a remarkable capacity in terms of reconciling professional commitment and family life.
For her part, journalist Meryem Boutouraout, vice-president of the Moroccan Forum of Young Journalists (FMIJ), highlighted the strong presence of women in the media at all stages of media production, considering, however, that strengthening their presence in the editorial decision-making process is likely to give a strong boost to their contribution to the sector.
Nezha Hadrami, head of the Studies and Legal Affairs Division at the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication – communication department – indicated, for his part, that great efforts have been made on the legislative and awareness-raising levels regarding the position of women in media establishments and the image of women in the media in general.
