The species is endemic to the region, extending from Oaxaca, Mexico, to Panama. Its presence not only has great ecological value, but also cultural and social value, since it is our national bird and national symbol.

Forest fire recorded near an area that protects the species

The Quetzal Biotope in Baja Verapaz is another place where it can be seen. This important refuge, established in 1976, has as its main objective the protection of the species and its habitat in the cloud forest.

A forest fire that started last week in the Unión Barrios village of Salamá threatened to reach the biotope. Fortunately, for today, Tuesday, April 9, the authorities reported that the incident is 80% controlled, thanks to the efforts of brigade members and volunteers.

To support the volunteers fighting the fire, different collection centers have been set up, such as the one located at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala. The center will be open until Wednesday, April 10.
