jpnn.com – Venezuela and Russia have blocked Signal – an app that is a popular choice for encrypted messaging and for people trying to avoid government censorship.

The blocking appears to be part of a crackdown on dissent.

In Venezuela, the blockade comes after last month’s disputed presidential election results led to protests and arrests as President Nicolas Maduro tries to maintain his grip on power, according to MSNBC.

Internet monitoring service NetBlocks said late Thursday that Signal had become “inaccessible on some internet providers” in the country.

Maduro also ordered the blocking of X, as reported by The Associated Press.

In Russia, the country’s communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, said Signal was violating Russian law, Interfax reported.

People in Russia are also unable to sign up for new Signal accounts without using a VPN, Reuters reports.

Russia has restricted the backend of the Signal messaging app on most internet providers as of Friday (8/9) afternoon, NetBlocks said.
