Significant Savings Await Eligible Households: Understanding the Social Tariff for Electricity Discounts

by time news

It is worth noting that the social tariff is lower by 4.5-7.5 cents per kilowatt-hour (depending on the beneficiary category) compared to the normal tariff of each provider, thus ensuring a significant discount for those who qualify.

The Beneficiary Categories

There are two categories of beneficiaries:

  1. Category A includes those who meet the eligibility criteria for the Social Solidarity Income.
  2. Category B includes those who meet the following criteria:
  • They have an annual total actual or deemed income, up to the limits of the table that we publish.

For a household that includes a person or persons with disability of sixty-seven percent (67%) and above, the income limits increase by €8,000.

For a household that includes a person or persons in need of mechanical support using medical devices, which are provided at home and are essential for their life, the income limits increase by €15,000.

For each additional adult member, an amount of €4,500 is added, and for each additional minor member, an amount of €2,250 is added, up to a total limit of €31,500 regardless of the number of members in the household.

The specific maximum limit (€31,500) increases by €8,000 for a household that includes a person or persons with a disability of sixty-seven percent (67%) and above, and by €15,000 for a household that includes a person or persons in need of mechanical support using medical devices, which are provided at home and are essential for their life.

  • They and the members of the household have real estate in Greece or abroad, with a total taxable value of up to €120,000 for a single-member household, increasing by €15,000 for each additional member and up to a maximum limit of €180,000.
  • The members of the household do not fall under the provisions of luxury tax and do not declare living expenses for crew payments for leisure boats, tuition fees for private schools, and for domestic helpers, drivers, teachers, and other personnel.

How to Submit Applications

The application for inclusion in the social tariff must be submitted every year to re-evaluate the eligibility criteria for membership.

Applications are submitted electronically through ΗΔΙΚΑ by the taxpayer of the household or their spouse, provided that the electricity supply is already in the name of the taxpayer or their spouse.

Each household receives the social tariff only for the supply of the main residence.

The Limits for Each Beneficiary Category

The social tariff applies to the total quarterly consumption and up to the applicable limits set for each beneficiary category are as follows:

  • Single-member household 1400 kilowatt-hours
  • Household with two adult members or single-parent family with one minor member 1600 kilowatt-hours
  • Household with two adult members and one minor member or single-parent family with two minor members 1700 kilowatt-hours
  • Household with three adult members or two adults and two minors or single-parent family with three minor members 1800 kilowatt-hours
  • Household with three adults and one minor member or two adults and three minors or single-parent family with four minor members 1900 kilowatt-hours
  • Household with four adult members or two adults and four minors or single-parent family with five minor members 2000 kilowatt-hours.

Consumption of less than 200 kWh per four-month period does not qualify for the social tariff discount.

  • For a household that includes a person or persons with a disability of 67% and above, the above consumption limits increase by 300 kWh.
  • For a household that includes a person or persons in need of mechanical support using medical devices, which are provided at home and are essential for their life, the above consumption limits increase by 600 kWh.
  • For each additional adult member, 200 kWh of consumption is added, and for each additional minor member, 100 kWh of consumption is added, up to a total limit of 2,400 kWh regardless of the number of members in the household.

The specific maximum limit (2,400 kWh) increases by 300 kWh for a household that includes a person or persons with a disability of 67% and above and by 600 kWh for a household that includes a person or persons in need of mechanical support using medical devices, which are provided at home and are essential for their life.

  • The discount is 4.5 cents per kilowatt-hour for beneficiaries of Category B and 7.5 cents for Category A. It applies to the charge for daytime consumption or nighttime consumption if the consumer has a nighttime tariff.
