Actress Sigourney Weaver receives a lifetime achievement award at the Venice Film Festival – and sheds tears.

Hollywood star Sigourney Weaver will be honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 81st Venice Film Festival. On August 28, the first day of the festival, Weaver spoke at a press conference about how her iconic “Alien” role paved the way for subsequent generations of women – up to today’s second US presidential candidate, Kamala Harris.

According to the US magazine “Variety”, Weaver seemed to burst into tears at the thought that her own acting career could have helped women like Harris. She was “so excited about Kamala”, the 74-year-old explained. And she continued: “The thought that my work could have anything to do with her rise makes me very happy, because it’s true.” Women regularly come up to Weaver and thank her, the iconic actress revealed.

Sigourney Weaver first took on the titular, terrifying alien fighting machine in Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking sci-fi horror film “Alien” in 1979. Three more sequels starring Weaver followed up until 1997. “Alien: Romulus,” the latest entry in the long-running franchise, was released in theaters just this month. However, Weaver does not appear in this installment.

At her press conference in Venice, Weaver also praised the fact that there are increasingly better roles for older actresses in the film industry. “I think they suddenly decided that older women can play interesting characters and started writing a lot of older female characters,” she said.
