Coimbatore: “In the last one year, 240 tonnes of silk has been sold in the Coimbatore silk market,” said Abdul Farooq, assistant director of silk development department.

Farmers and sericulture farmers bring white silk cocoons from various districts including Coimbatore, Tirupur, Nilgiris, Theni to the silk sale shop operating on behalf of Silk Development Department on Balasundaram Road, Coimbatore.

According to the quality of the cocoons, the price is fixed. It is used to be bought by registered traders in daily auctions.

From April 2022 to March 2023, the minimum price is Rs.550 and the maximum price is Rs. Up to 800 cocoons have been sold. Seeing this profit, many people are showing interest in sericulture.

Abdul Farooq, Assistant Director of Silk Development Department, said, “240 tons of silk has been sold from April 2022 to March 2023 in the Coimbatore silk market.

Through this, the government has got a revenue of Rs. 19 lakh 84 thousand 970,” he said.
