Silvia from Sweden, dazzling at the state dinner given for Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron

The highlight of the state visit of the French president and his wife, the state dinner given in Stockholm on Tuesday January 30, 2024, was the occasion for a display of pomp… and tiaras! With, very beautifully, the Queen of Sweden herself.

Kalix caviar, cod loin, reindeer with juniper berries… If the kitchens of the royal palace in Stockholm showed the extent of their know-how during the state dinner in honor of Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron, the show was also – and above all – that offered by the royal family, with Queen Silvia at the head.

Spectacular in a purple evening dress, the wife of King Carl XVI Gustaf had chosen the famous cameo tiara, a gift from Emperor Napoleon I to his first wife, Empress Josephine. A nice nod to France.

In addition to the tiara, the queen wore the necklace, bracelet, earrings and brooch that make up the set. The cameo tiara is not only a priceless gem – and a fine example of the 19th century taste for antique profiles – it also has sentimental value: Queen Silvia wore it for her wedding in 1976 , just like her eldest daughter, Crown Princess Victoria, in 2010. The latter wore the so-called cut-steel tiara, one of her favorites, made for Queen Hortense and inherited by Queen Josephine of Sweden, her niece, daughter by Eugène de Beauharnais.

According to legend, this jewel, completely forgotten, was found by Queen Silvia, newly married, in a palace wardrobe! Crown Princess Victoria notably styled it for the series of official portraits broadcast on the occasion of her father’s golden jubilee.

Finally, unsurprisingly, Princess Sofia wore the tiara she received for her wedding. Speculation was rife among experts about the stones that would adorn it – the jewel being transformable. Emeralds? Turquoises? Citrines?

It will ultimately be the pearls that will have appeared. An elegant choice…
