On April 4, SC reported on the murder of a 44-year-old woman in Hrodna, which took place in March. According to one version of the investigation, she was beaten and then strangled by her 51-year-old husband, who then committed suicide.

According to SC, shortly before the incident, there was a conflict between the husband and wife, but they reconciled and continued to live together. The man was not brought to criminal responsibility. The husband and wife have two adult daughters who live abroad, writes “Pozirk”.

On March 26, in Minsk, according to preliminary information from the SC, a 73-year-old man stabbed his 71-year-old wife several times with a knife, after which he threw himself out of the window. The woman died.

On the morning of March 15, a 38-year-old man killed his 39-year-old wife in Stolin (Brest region). His 11-year-old son told the man’s parents about what happened. Numerous injuries were found on the head of the deceased. Traces of blood and the alleged instrument of the crime – an ax – were washed up in the kitchen. After the murder, the man tried to end his life by suicide, at a speed of 180 km/h he crashed his car into a stele at the entrance to the city, but survived.

On March 14, a 60-year-old resident of Babruysk (Mohiliev region) in a fit of jealousy almost blew up the house where his former roommate was with her husband. There were no victims.

Answering the question of whether a law on combating domestic violence is necessary in Belarus, the head of the Minsk city organization of the Belarusian Union of Women, the head of the main department of ideological work and youth affairs of the Minsk City Executive Committee Olga Chamadanova said on March 6 that Belarusians live in a safe country thanks to the “work of law enforcement agencies”.

Various types of domestic violence are experienced by 17.6% of Belarusian women who have a partner, according to the results of a survey conducted by the online line for victims of domestic violence oliviahelp.org with the help of Chatham House.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, about 80,000 reports of domestic violence are recorded every year. There are 21,000 people who used violence at home on the preventive register.

There is no law on combating domestic violence in Belarus. The corresponding document was developed several times. In October 2018, Lukashenka sharply criticized another option, calling it “foolishness, taken primarily from the West.”
